Aviation

Overview

Benefits

Usage

In-flight icing is caused by super-cooled water droplets which exist liquid form in stratiform and convective clouds.  When these droplets strike a surface, such as the edges of an airframe, they immediately freeze.  Ice accretion can cause potentially dangerous performance degradation or result in unexpected changes to flight characteristics due to the effect of icing on airflow patterns.

The removal of icing is conducted using mechanical means or the application of a deicing fluid.  Mechanical means include heating, usage of pneumatic deicing boots, and directing "bleed air" along leading edges. Deicing fluid is used to remove ice that has already formed on critical surfaces.

Helicity takes an anti-icing approach to dramatically reduce the need for deicing and other active means for removing frozen contaminants. Miracle® products bond with aircraft surfaces, forming a durable and renewable coating that prevents the accretion of clear, rime, mixed, and frost ice on treated surfaces.

  • Reduces the need for active deicing and anti-icing methods
  • Improves the performance of your existing anti-icing technology (i.e. bleed air, weeping wing, pneumatic boots, heating coils)
  • Provides UV radiation and corrosion protection
  • Extremely lightweight protection (2.6 g per square meter)
  • Non-hazardous to the environment in accordance with EPA regulations

Helicity has multiple formulations with varying degrees of opacity and durability.  We can also create customized colors to suit your application needs.

Our products can be used synergistically with existing anti-icing technologies, including weeping wing, pneumatic boots, heating coils, and bleed air.  Our products will not melt existing ice or snow, but will prevent ice from bonding to protected surfaces.

A coating of roughly 100 microns is sufficient for optimal performance, thus adding negligible weight to aircraft.  Our formulations will not damage any application surfaces and can be applied to all exterior surfaces of the airframe.

Rail

Overview

Benefits

Usage

Icing can create problems for rail infrastructure, railcars, and other transit equipment causing service disruptions and safety concerns.

Overhead electric contact wires and third rails are especially prone to experiencing icing-related problems since any ice accretion will compromise electrical contact.  It is also crucial to prevent snow and ice build-up at switch points and crossings to reduce risk of derailment and ensure a functioning signaling system.

Helicity’s anti-icing coatings are applied prior to adverse weather events and prevent frozen precipitation from bonding to treated surfaces.  Our products strongly adhere to a variety of substrates and can be used on vertical or irregular surfaces.  Our anti-icing coatings last for days and can be easily renewed with a spray application.

  • Allows ice to be easily sheared from treated surfaces
  • Reduces operational costs and maintenance time for ice removal
  • Product stays where applied and can be used on vertical and irregular surfaces
  • Extremely thin product application layer (100 microns) required for optimal performance, leading to high cost efficiency
  • High flash point, which allows for product to be heated prior to application
  • Reduces wear and tear of conductor shoes
  • Non-hazardous to the environment in accordance with EPA regulations

Helicity has multiple products that we can adapt to provide a customized solution for your precise needs.

Our industrial line of products can be applied to railroad infrastructure, rolling stock, and electric contact wires. Typical applications include third/contact rails, running rails, switches, and railcar exteriors, including doors.

Our anti-icing coatings will not melt existing ice or snow, but will prevent ice from bonding to protected surfaces.  Residual ice on treated stationary surfaces can be easily cleared using a light mechanical force.  Any frozen precipitation that falls on treated moving surfaces will be self-cleared via wind shear or vibrational forces.

Maritime

Overview

Benefits

Usage

Freezing temperatures combined with high wind speeds result in cold spray from the sea to freeze upon contact with above-water ship surfaces. Icing buildup can lead to the inoperability of deck equipment, hazardous conditions on deck, and reduced stability.  In extreme cases, the added weight of the ice can potentially capsize the ship.

Many of our formulations prevent ice from bonding to treated surfaces while also protecting against saltwater corrosion.  Our coatings will not migrate from application areas and can be use on vertical or irregular surfaces.  Coated surfaces can be easily renewed using a spray application.

Heavy vehicles

Overview

Benefits

Usage

Snow and ice flying off the roof of heavy vehicles, such as tractor trailers, can cause serious accidents and property damage.  Due to these risks, some states, such as New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania mandate that drivers remove any accumulated ice and snow on the hood, trunk and roofs of motor vehicles.  Currently trucking companies rely on mechanical methods to remove ice, which are inconvenient, inefficient and oftentimes dangerous.  Drivers risk injury when using ladders to reach the tops of trailers to clean snow and ice from the roof of their trucks.

In addition to the safety concerns, accumulated snow and ice can add hundreds of pounds to the vehicle weight and increase fuel consumption and operating costs.

Our coatings prevent ice from bonding to treated surfaces and also protect against corrosion from road de-icers.  Snow and ice will self-clear when the vehicles reach speeds up to 25 miles per hour.  Our products can also be used in conjunction with manual scraping devices to dramatically increase effectiveness.

Power lines

Overview

Benefits

Usage

Snow and ice accretion on power lines can cause severe damage due to overloading and wire galloping.  The increased weight burden on conductors, combined with unacceptable movement due to altered aerodynamics can cause poles and towers to buckle and fail.

The current methods utilized to remove icing from power lines include manual de-icing, chemical de-icing, and electrical heating.  Many of these means are time-consuming and labor intensive.  Helicity’s anti-icing coatings can drastically reduce the amount of time and effort needed to remove frozen contaminants from power structures and cables.

When applied prior to adverse weather events, our coatings prevent snow and ice from bonding to treated surfaces.  Our products strongly adhere to a variety of substrates and can be used on vertical or irregular surfaces, including conductors, insulators and towers.

Construction

Overview

Benefits

Usage

In cold climates, many buildings accumulate ice and snow formations that decrease visibility and pose hazards to people and property.  Ice accretion is a serious concern for taller buildings in areas with large volumes of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.  Furthermore, the trend toward more energy-efficient buildings has led to the addition of various exterior elements that promote the capture and increase the lifespan of frozen precipitation.  As a result, there has been a sharp uptick in the number of falling snow and ice incidents from newer buildings.

When applied prior to adverse weather events, our coatings prevent snow and ice from bonding to treated surfaces, thereby reducing hazardous ice formations.  Our products strongly adhere to a variety of substrates (including both metal and glass) and can be used on vertical or complex, irregular surfaces.
